J.J. Abrams shares more The Force Awakens screen tests for Daisy Ridley and Jennifer Lawrence (Vanessa Bayer), Shia LaBeouf (Kyle Mooney), Matthew McConaughey, John Boyega, Emma Stone, Janelle Monae (Sasheer Zamata), Jon Hamm and more.
IBTIMES – Star Wars: The Force Awakens star Daisy Ridley paid tribute to Nasa’s first female launch director, Charlie Blackwell-Thompson, in a video published on 4 May. Ridley described Nasa’s female employees as “heroic” and said they “continually inspire girls to enter the space programme.”
Spaceflight engineer Blackwell-Thompson will be the first woman to oversee a Nasa lift-off and launch, and will also be the launch director for the Space Launch System, a rocket designed to carry astronauts into deep space and potentially Mars.
Nasa is developing the capabilities needed to send humans to an asteroid by 2025 and Mars in the 2030s – goals outlined in the bipartisan Nasa Authorization Act of 2010 and in the US National Space Policy, also issued in 2010.
Nasa’s powerful SLS rocket will enable these “proving ground” missions to test new capabilities. Human missions to Mars will rely on Orion and an evolved version of SLS that will be the most powerful launch vehicle ever flown.
Daisy Ridley (joined by a few friends) wishes fans a happy Star Wars Day and offers thanks for all the money raised through Star Wars: Force for Change. This marks your last chance to donate — and the chance to win a trip to Ireland and visit Skellig Michael, the iconic location of Rey’s fateful meeting with Luke Skywalker in ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’.
VANITY FAIR – Star Wars: The Force Awakens has been available on iTunes since April 1, but as it turns out there are still even more secrets to be revealed about the biggest movie of 2015. In this brand-new featurette, now available on iTunes digital downloads of the film, costume designer Michael Kaplan explains his inspirations for the costume worn for nearly the entire movie by Rey (Daisy Ridley), and which has now become rightfully iconic. It had to be practical clothing for the desert, of course, but Kaplan also wanted an element of beauty for when Ridley was walking over desert sand dunes. And, as he explains, when we first meet her, “we don’t know if she’s a man, or a woman, or an alien.” So there had to be a bit of mystery in there as well.
This new feature, “Dressing the Galaxy,” is available on both new downloads of The Force Awakens on iTunes and has been added to existing downloads. If any of this explainer helps you with your homemade Rey costume for yourself, your child, or your dog, just remember: you heard it here first, and you owe us a picture.
MTV – When the trailer for Rogue One: A Star Wars Story dropped earlier this week, it inspired a slew of new fan theories, but the one that’s garnered the most attention is the connection between Felicity Jones’s Jyn Erso and Daisy Ridley’s Rey. Does the key to Rey’s parentage lie in rebel fighter Jyn? Or are they just two strong women who coincidentally share the same color hair?
According to Ridley, rumors of Jyn and Rey’s familial connection have been greatly exaggerated. “I’m not being funny you guys, but just because she’s white and got brown hair… it doesn’t mean she’s my mom,” Ridley told MTV’s Josh Horowitz backstage at the MTV Movie Awards.
And besides, Ridley already knows who Rey’s parents are — and she doesn’t think it’s that big of a deal. “I think the amazing thing about [Episode VII] is that Finn and Rey don’t come from anywhere, and they find a place,” Ridley, who’s currently filming Rian Johnson’s Star Wars: Episode VIII, said. “So to me, it’s funny that people think it’s so important because I don’t really think it is.”
It’s unclear if Episode VIII will delve into Rey’s backstory, but we do know the film will pick up right where The Force Awakens left off: with Rey handing over Luke’s lightsaber to the fallen Jedi on that island on Ahch-To. Ridley describes the film as “darker” than Episode VII, and when asked about Rey’s future as a Jedi, she gave this very intriguing response: “I don’t know if I am a Jedi… I don’t think I am.”
“We’ve had this debate as to whether Leia is because she uses her Force powers,” she continued. “Just because she’s not like, oh I’m going on an adventure like Luke doesn’t make her any less Forceful.”
It’s official: 2017 has never seemed further away.
