ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY – Rey is a scavenger. Rey is a desert rat. She is wrapped against the wind and heat in weathered, mummy-like fabric. She picks through the wreckage of a long-ago battle for anything that could help her survive.

We also know Rey is one of the new lead characters in this journey back to the Star Wars universe, her destiny intersecting with a runaway stormtrooper named Finn (John Boyega) and a Resistance fighter pilot named Poe Dameron (Oscar Isaac.) She wields a blaster similar to the one Han Solo used to waste Greedo in the original Star Wars.

Although everything else about Rey has been kept hidden by director J.J. Abrams and Lucasfilm, we’re starting to know more about the character than we do about the actress who plays her, 23-year-old Daisy Ridley – who also emerged from the shadows at the Star Wars Celebration event.

Judging by the photo below, presented last week at that convention’s The Force Awakens panel, Rey also hangs around on a collapsed AT-AT, those Imperial locomotives-on-stilts seen trudging through the snowy wasteland of Hoth in The Empire Strikes Back. That’s her talking to Abrams while standing on the half-buried leg of one of the mechanical monsters.

After her appearance before a global audience of Star Wars fanatics, and before she slipped away in a lizard mask to peruse the convention shops – accompanied by Boyega, disguised in a Clone Trooper helmet – Entertainment Weekly had an opportunity to find out a little about the woman behind Rey.

Here are the basics: she’s trained as a dancer and singer, and has previously had small roles on the British TV shows Youngers, Toast of London, and Silent Witness. Recently, she also noticed something unusual in the newest Marvel Studios movie – her old high school was used for a Black Widow dream sequence depicting ballet dancers at the place where the superhero was trained as an assassin.

With the dropping of The Force Awaken’s second trailer, hype for the movie is reaching an all time high. Even with more than seven months to go, we’re feeling the pangs of nostalgia and wonder associated with the Original Trilogy. Even so, we know precious little about the new films. However, given the new pieces of information from Star Wars Celebration Anaheim and the new trailer, we can start to piece together parts of the new films and their players.

So, what do we know about Rey?
First and foremost, we know that Rey is a self sufficient scavenger on the planet Jakku according to rumors and Daisy Ridley’s own words on Thursday’s Force Awakens panel. She’s clearly good with technology, judging from her riding a speeder that appears to be converted from a starship engine. It’s very likely she’s been salvaging wrecks from the Battle of Jakku her whole life and converting them to meet her needs.

There was also a rumor that she’s converted the empty husk of a fallen AT-AT into a dwelling that seems to be confirmed by a behind the scenes set photo released on Thursday. If you look closely at the picture below, Ridley is clearly standing on the fallen leg of an AT-AT.

Do we know anything else about her?
Well, this is where it gets tricky. Based on what we know of the films, we always have a humble protagonist living in the hind end of space (usually a dusty hind end at that) with mysterious family roots who rises to meet a great destiny. With Anakin Skywalker, he was a slave boy on Tatooine who happened to be conceived by the Force. Luke Skywalker was a moisture farmer who also happened to be the hidden son of a Clone Wars hero and fallen Jedi Knight.

If the Sequel Trilogy wants to follow the formula (and they may well choose not to), it wouldn’t be a surprise if Rey had ties to characters to the past.

BBC – Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy talks The Force Awakens and British talent at Star Wars Convention

It’s the final few hours of the official Star Wars Celebration in Anaheim, California. Kathleen Kennedy, the President of Lucasfilm and one of the producers of the eagerly awaited The Force Awakens is reflecting on the unprecedented reaction to the film’s latest teaser trailer, unveiled to fans at the start of the convention.
“It was staggering,” she says. “When Harrison [Ford who plays Han Solo] and Chewie come on screen and he says ‘Chewie, we’re home!’ and the entire room of almost eight thousand people just leapt to their feet and roared, I mean I can’t think of anything I’ve ever been to – other than a rock concert – that felt quite like that.”

Search for new stars
The level of expectation surrounding the film is huge, partly because it sees the return to a galaxy far, far away of not just Harrison Ford’s Han Solo, but also Mark Hamill’s Luke Skywalker and Carrie Fisher’s Princess Leia. It’s been more than thirty years since the three last appeared in a Star Wars movie together.

But there’s a new trio at the core of this sequel to 1983’s Return of the Jedi. Oscar Isaac who plays Resistance pilot Poe Dameron. And two young British actors, Daisy Ridley (Rey) and John Boyega (Finn).

They were introduced to deafening cheers and applause at the same Celebration event where the teaser was premiered. An early indication of how this film is likely to change both their lives. “[It’s] a journey no-one can prepare either one of them for,” admits Kennedy. “I think so far they’ve handled it great.”

Both Brits were cast after an extensive process that included traditional auditioning of young actors as well as a series of open casting calls that attracted tens of thousands of hopefuls.

“Daisy Ridley was a product of a massive search that we went on for months and months and months. But when she came into the room I would say almost instantaneously she just lit up and was so obviously the right person that we were looking for. She really claimed the role.
