THE HOLLYWOOD REPORTER – The British government formally announced Monday that episode eight of the Star Wars franchise will be shot at Pinewood Studios just outside of London.

“Pleased to announce #StarWarsVIII will be filmed here in UK @PinewoodStudios – great news for @starwars fans & our UK creative industries,” tweeted George Osborne, the U.K. Chancellor of the Exchequer, the British equivalent of the secretary of the Treasury. Osborne also trumped up the $152 million (₤100 million) inward investment and 3,000 jobs the production will bring.

The news comes on Star Wars Day (May the Fourth), but also coincidentally a bank holiday Monday in the U.K. Lucasfilm and Disney representatives couldn’t immediately be reached. Pinewood declined to comment.

Yet to be titled, Star Wars Episode VIII will be directed by Rian Johnson. Filming is due to start in 2016 with a release date scheduled for 2017.

Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy said late last year that the company has continued its “long tradition of Star Wars movies being made in London.” She added: “It goes back to 1976, and to know that we are now coming back and we will be making the movies once again based out of Pinewood.”

In Britain, the timing of the announcement is partly seen as a political move by Osborne, an attempt to associate his party, the Conservatives of David Cameron, with a high-profile injection of foreign investment as the U.K. election takes place on May 7.

VANITY FAIR – For some Star Wars fans, there’s no May the Fourth news finer than this: director J. J. Abrams revealed that he’s thought about killing off the very controversial Jar Jar Binks. Sitting in an edit bay at his Bad Robot production office and pointing to a frame of Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Abrams told Vanity Fair contributing editor Bruce Handy, “I have a thought about putting Jar Jar Binks’s bones in the desert there. I’m serious! Only three people will notice, but they’ll love it.”

That’s just the beginning of the behind-the-scenes Star Wars secrets Abrams, Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy, and others divulged for the cover story of Vanity Fair’s June issue, available as a digital edition on Thursday, May 7, and on newsstands nationwide on Tuesday, May 12.

In addition to the blend of old and new characters on the cover, Annie Leibovitz traveled to the film’s set and photographed never-before-seen images of characters played by Adam Driver, Gwendoline Christie, and Lupita Nyong’o. The Oscar-winning actress is covered in C.G.I. tracking dots, revealing that even her most die-hard fans may not recognize her playing a purely animated character in the film.

VANITY FAIR – Chewie, they’re home. On the cover of the June issue of Vanity Fair, photographed by Annie Leibovitz, Han Solo (Harrison Ford) re-unites with his trusty co-pilot Chewbacca, and is joined by some new faces: Rey (Daisy Ridley), Finn (John Boyega), and a little droid who goes by the name of BB-8. All will be featured in Star Wars: Episode VII—The Force Awakens, which opens December 18.

COMIC BOOK – Star Wars Action News Facebook page claims that AMC is planning a Star Wars movie marathon to coincide with the release of The Force Awakens.

If this event does happen, it would show all three films from the original Star Wars trilogy and of course, the three prequels. Six films in total. It sounds like a lot, but Marvel fans recently endured back-to-back screenings of all 11 Marvel Cinematic Universe movies for The Ultimate Marvel Marathon.

Lucasfilm and visionary director J.J. Abrams join forces to take you back again to a galaxy far, far away as “Star Wars” returns to the big screen with “Star Wars: The Force Awakens.”

Star Wars: The Force Awakens opens in theaters December 18, 2015.
