THE HOLLYWOOD REPORTER – Daisy Ridley has confirmed that she has been in talks to star in the much-hyped Tomb Raider reboot.

Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter at the Empire Awards, held in London on Sunday, the Star Wars: The Force Awakens actress – who picked up the best female newcomer award – said there “have been conversations” about her picking up the Lara Croft reins left by Angelina Jolie, but she has not been offered the role.

“I’m waiting for someone to say ‘I want you, let’s do it’,” she said, adding that there wasn’t a script for the film yet.

Although currently filming the 8th episode of Star Wars, Ridley said she would have time to take the additional role given the opportunity. “Absolutely, I’m trying to fill up my calendar,” she said.

Ridley’s co-star John Boyega – winner of Empire’s best male newcomer award – admitted that he himself had eyed Ridley for the Lara Croft role.

“I played Tomb Raider the game, it’s a new take and I think the movies are going to be based on that version,” he told THR. “But I texted Daisy [and] was like, ‘this is you!’ and ‘you need to get on that because you could be Lara Croft.’ She should be.”

Alongside Boyega and Ridley’s awards, The Force Awakens picked up three other honors Sunday evening, including best director for J.J. Abrams.

Role Rumors

DEADLINE – Newcomer Daisy Ridley may have hit the motherlode of film franchises when the then-virtual unknown was cast in Star Wars: The Force Awakens, but the 23-year-old Brit actress is in the running for another cinematic icon: Lara Croft. Deadline understands that the fresh-faced Ridley is one of a number of actresses being considered for the Tomb Raider reboot that Warner Bros and MGM are partnering on to produce and release, with GK Films’ Graham King producing.

While conversations have taken place, this is still very early and there have been no official negotiations or offer yet with the producers keeping their options wide open at this stage. This is one of THE plum gigs out there for a young actress. The role was famously played before by Angelina Jolie at her most kick-ass and pneumatic. Based on the long-running video game franchise, Tomb Raider follows the English archaeologist Lara Croft through a series of adventures heavily inspired by Indiana Jones (and, to a lesser extent, Alan Quartermaine).

The latest adaptation, which has been in development for a number of years, received a jolt of adrenaline when the video game series was rebooted by game developer Square Enix with 2013’s Tomb Raider, which depicted Croft’s first adventure as an archaeology student and follow-up Rise of the Tomb Raider. That younger take on the character’s origin and path to derring-do are believed to have given the film’s producers some creative guidance.

Cassidy Lange is overseeing for MGM, with Drew Crevello doing so for Warners. Denis O’Sullivan of GK Films is overseeing the production.

Daisy Ridley, currently shooting Star Wars: Episode VIII, is repped by CAA. Her only confirmed post-Star Wars gig to date is her coming on-board The Eagle Huntress doc as an exec producer.
